The settlement of Chaumont was founded in 1802 by European settlers. Chaumont was named after Chaumont Castle in the Loire Valley of France which was owned by a supporter of the American Revolution. It was a fishing and ship building village in the early days. Incorporated as the Village of Chaumont in 1874, the historic core of Chaumont is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
